Rogers Edge Business Improvement District- The Results are In!
Rogers Edge initiative attracts businesses to Northside neighborhoods.
Only a few years back Sheridan Road was a mix of business and empty storefronts. Devon Avenue had longtime retail, but plenty of vacant lots. Rogers Edge was created to open lines of communication between the Rogers Park, and Edgewater business leadership. Acting as a mediator, Loyola University hired a consulting firm to better understand the community.
The firm created detailed demographics of Rogers Park and Edgewater communities.
“We realized that a lot of the community members are married couples, with children, we also have single couples that are middle income,” explained Cecilia Rodriguez a representative of Loyola University on the Rogers Edge committee.
Although businesses thrive on the large student consumer population, these demographics are important for the times when students are not on campus, like during winter and summer break.
Through Rogers Edge, businesses are given logistic and demographic support when the decide to join this community. Sheridan storefronts are full with a new Taco Bell, Insomnia Cookies, and Clarks Diner. Devon Avenue has new storefront space and modern condominium homes ready to rent.
Rogers Edge initiatives go further with sponsorship of events like Polar Palooza, Chicago’s only Northside Winter festival. With an estimated 5,000 community members in attendance this festival was the culmination of the planning and collaboration between Rogers Park, Edgewater, and Loyola University.
Local businesses sold a variety of crafts, while families enjoyed live reindeer, ice skating, and plenty of food anddrink. A Christmas greens sale and raised over $800 to benefit local schools.
“Polar Palooza had a little something for everyone,” said Jaz Hayes, a volunteer coordinator for Polar Palooza.
The Rogers Edge initiative has given the Northside area a boost of liveliness and a much needed facelift.
